1999 Sigma Ip Research Anna Louise Hoffman Award for Outstanding Achievement in Graduate Research
Joanne Marie Wittbrodt, Wayne State University
Joanne Marie Wittbrodt, a computational chemist at Wayne State University, has been recognized for her exceptional graduate research on the gas-phase reactivity of small molecules and their interactions with surfaces. Her studies include the thermal decomposition of dichlorosilane, water interactions with aluminum oxide models, and the reactivity of silicon-phosphorus compounds. She also collaborates with experimentalists, using ab initio calculations to interpret the behavior of newly synthesized compounds.
Known for her self-motivation and independent approach, Joanne completed multiple publications early in her graduate studies, ultimately authoring seven papers and presenting her work at numerous national and regional conferences.
Beyond research, Joanne developed and taught an undergraduate Computational Chemistry course at Saginaw Valley University, earning high praise from her students. Her contributions have been recognized with several awards, including the Jaspar Teaching Fellowship, the Thomas C. Rumble University Graduate Fellowship, and the Esther and Stanley Kirschner Teaching Award.
