2005 Sigma Research Award in Professional Excellence

Recipient: Professor Ann Nalley, Cameron University

Professor Ann Nalley was honored with the 2005 Sigma Research Award in Professional Excellence, a recognition granted to women who have made outstanding contributions to chemistry and related scientific fields.

Dr. Nalley has served as a Professor of Chemistry in the Physical Science Department at Cameron University since 1969, shaping generations of scientists through her teaching, research, and mentorship. Before joining Cameron, she taught chemistry and mathematics at Muskogee High School. Her career also includes visiting scientist and professorship roles at the University of Oklahoma, the University of Texas at Dallas, and the University of Southern Mississippi.

Her academic background is equally impressive: she earned her B.Sc. from Northeastern Oklahoma State University, a Master’s in Analytical Chemistry from Oklahoma State University, and a Ph.D. in Radiation Chemistry from Texas Woman’s University. Dr. Nalley’s research spans cosmetic analysis, nanostructured materials, molecular modeling, and applied research in the petroleum industry, demonstrating both scientific depth and practical application.

Beyond research, Dr. Nalley has held prominent leadership roles within the American Chemical Society (ACS), serving as National President Elect (2005), President (2006), and Past President (2007). She also spent seven years on the ACS Board of Directors and played pivotal roles in professional committees, symposia, and divisions. Her recognition as the Oklahoma Chemist of the Year (1992) and the recipient of the Henry Hill Award for Professionalism (1996) reflect her long-standing dedication to advancing chemistry and supporting women in science.

Internationally, Dr. Nalley broke barriers as the first woman appointed to the PACIFICHEM organizing committee, where she led the 2005 symposium “Women Past, Present, and Future”. Over her career, she has organized more than 27 professional symposia addressing critical issues in chemistry, many highlighting the role and challenges of women in science.

Her accolades extend beyond the laboratory and classroom. Dr. Nalley has been recognized with numerous teaching, research, and service awards, including the Oklahoma State Science Teacher of the Year (2001), the OCAST Award for Economic Development (2001), and the Cameron University Distinguished Service Award (1995). She has also been inducted into the Cameron University Hall of Fame (1996).

A dedicated member of multiple professional organizations—including Sigma Xi, Phi Kappa Phi, Sigma Pi Sigma, and the American Institute of Chemists Dr. Nalley’s career reflects an extraordinary commitment to advancing science and supporting the next generation of chemists.

Outside of academia, she demonstrates the same compassion in her personal life, maintaining a refuge for over 40 displaced animals, exemplifying leadership not just in science but also in service and humanity.
