Student Awards

Sigma Research is committed to recognizing and supporting women at all stages of their academic journey in chemistry. Each year, the Society offers a series of prestigious awards and scholarships designed to honor excellence in research, leadership, and academic achievement. Applications must follow the specific criteria, conditions, and dossier requirements outlined for each award.

Anna Louise Hoffman Award for Outstanding Achievement in Graduate Research (Annual)

Established in 1977, this award honors the legacy of Anna Louise Hoffman, a dedicated leader of Sigma Research. It recognizes exceptional achievement in original chemical research by a woman graduate student. Candidates must be full-time students pursuing a graduate degree in chemistry or related fields. Nominations are submitted by faculty, with supporting dossiers and confidential recommendations.
Award: $500, certificate, and one-year dues waiver.
Presentation: At a Sigma Research or ACS meeting, or coordinated with the awardee’s department.

Undergraduate Award for Excellence in Chemistry (Annual)

This award celebrates outstanding achievement in chemistry by a senior woman undergraduate student. A special category also exists for first-generation students. Candidates must demonstrate academic excellence and promise in chemistry. Faculty nominations and supporting dossiers are required.
Award: $500, certificate, and one-year dues waiver.
Presentation: Flexible—may occur at a Sigma Research meeting, ACS event, or local honors ceremony.

Gladys Anderson Emerson Scholarship (Annual)

Honoring Dr. Emerson, a pioneer in nutrition research and long-time leader of Sigma Research, this scholarship supports undergraduate women excelling in chemistry or biochemistry. Candidates must be members of Sigma Research and enrolled as juniors with at least one semester of study remaining. Selection is based on academic performance, leadership, and financial need.
Award: $2,000 stipend and certificate (up to two scholarships awarded annually).
Presentation: At a suitable academic or professional venue in consultation with the department.

Members-at-Large Reentry Award (Annual)

This award supports women who have returned to academia after an absence of three or more years and who demonstrate strong potential in chemistry. Candidates must be enrolled in a degree program at an accredited four-year institution and show exceptional commitment to academic and professional excellence.
Award: $1,500 stipend, certificate, and one-year complimentary membership.

Outstanding Young Women in Chemistry Award (Annual)

To inspire the next generation, Sigma Research recognizes female high school students with exceptional achievement in chemistry. This award promotes early engagement in science and celebrates promising young scholars.
Award: Certificate of recognition and acknowledgment in The Iotan, the Society’s national publication.
